Trying to be financially responsible, Carla and I started buying part of a cow to be butchered locally. One of our first years doing this the farmer asked if we wanted to come and meet "our" cow. NO! I don't want to meet the cow that is going to be staring up at me from my plate in the future! We were invited out to watch the cow be killed in their field, and while I didn't go - the farmer described that the cows aren't disturbed at all by what is happening. In fact, they start coming over to investigate what just happened to the cow that just died, unaware that they too are about to be killed.
